Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1656) foi uma pintora italiana do estilo barroco. É considerada uma das mais bem-sucedidas pintoras da sua época. Foi a primeira mulher a ser aceite na Academia de Belas Artes de Florença.

Na
época, talvez se esperasse que o trabalho artístico das mulheres deveria ser feminino, seguro
e plácido. Mas quando olhamos para esta pintura, não há nada de bonito ou
seguro na pintura mitológica desta pintora.
At the time, some might have thought that women’s art work was
supposed to be feminine and safe and placid. When we look at this painting
there is nothing pretty or safe about this mythological painting of this
painter.
