Land Acknowledgement – Reconhecimento de Terras

Land acknowledgements in Canada are a public statement, often delivered at the beginning of public events, meetings, official gatherings, in schools and other places, to show respect for Indigenous peoples and their traditional territories. They are not the same for every institution. They vary depending on the specific location and the Indigenous communities associated with that territory.

In Stratford, for example, before performances, this is what we hear:

“We acknowledge that the land on which we gather is the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe, and Neutral (Attawandaron) peoples.  We are grateful for the opportunity to live, work, and create theatre on this land.  We recognize the enduring presence and contributions of Indigenous peoples and commit to fostering respectful relationships and working towards reconciliation.”

O Reconhecimento de Terras no Canadá é uma declaração pública, frequentemente feita no início de eventos públicos, reuniões, encontros oficiais, em escolas e outros locais, para demonstrar respeito pelos povos indígenas e pelos seus territórios tradicionais. Estas declarações não são iguais para todas as instituições. Variam consoante o local específico e as comunidades indígenas associadas a esse território.

Em Stratford, por exemplo, antes do início de uma peça de teatro, ouvimos o seguinte:

“Reconhecemos que a terra em que nos reunimos é o território tradicional dos povos Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe e Neutral (Attawandaron). Estamos gratos pela oportunidade de viver, trabalhar e criar peças de teatro nesta terra. Reconhecemos a presença e as contribuições duradouras dos povos indígenas e comprometemo-nos a promover relações de respeito e a trabalhar no sentido da reconciliação.”
