Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Sandes de Queijo Grelhado

Trivialities:

How many sandwiches do Americans eat a year? Americans eat about 300 million sandwiches per day.

“Sandwiches are one of America’s most beloved lunch options. As a nation, we eat more than 300 million sandwiches every single day. Whether you like them stacked high with deli meats, or slathered with worldly condiments, sandwiches are the ultimate comfort food – in part because they’re so customizable.”

Why do Americans eat so many sandwiches?

“Americans eat so much of their meals not sitting down at a table. They are eating in their cars or at their desks, so sandwiches are easy,” says Erica Kenney, assistant professor of public-health nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.”

Canadians Eat 3.6 billion Sandwiches a Year!

National Sandwich Day is November 3rd.

By Registered Dietitian, Andrea Holweger – Oct 31, 2013

“Clubs, subs and paninis – whatever the type, Canadians have an affinity for sandwiches; a national survey by Udi’s Healthy Foods has discovered that Canadians eat approximately 3.6 billion sandwiches each year.

Sandwich origins date back to the 18th century when the “Earl of Sandwich”, an English aristocrat names John Montague, invented the sandwich by ordering meat served between two pieces of bread to keep his hands from getting greasy during uninterrupted card play.

Flash forward – sandwiches are the most packed item in the 21st century lunchbox.”

Trivialidades:

 Antiga Igreja Batista

Former Baptist Church

(Little Italy, Toronto)

The building of this church was completed in 1889. In 1970 it was sold to the Portuguese Seventh-Day Adventist Church. In 2007, the building was sold to a developer who turned this landmark into a four large multi-level luxury free hold homes. The exterior remained the same.

Quartel de Bombeiros

Fire Station

(Little Italy)

"The original Bellevue Fire Station, constructed in 1875, was a two-storey structure with one bay for a fire wagon. The eight-storey tower, added in 1899, possessed a lookout at the top, where firefighters scanned the surrounding streets in search of fires. The tower was also where the fire hoses were hung to dry. In 1911, the station received the first motorized fire engine in the city of Toronto.  It replaced the horse-drawn wagons that had previously been in use."

First Portuguese Canadian Cultural Centre

(Primeiro Centro Cultural Português-Canadiano)

On September 23, 1956, the first community organization was officially created in Ontario under the name of First Portuguese Canadian Cultural Centre. It became the second oldest Portuguese community organization in Canada. The first is located in Montreal.

First Portuguese quickly became a reference in the community, serving not only as a social and cultural centre but also as the unofficial Consulate General of Portugal in Toronto. It helped thousands of immigrants integrate into Canadian society while celebrating the traditions of the motherland. It was also inside the walls of the pioneering organization that other community associations were created, such as Casa do Alentejo, the Camoes Cup, the ACAPO, the Canadian Ethnocultural Council, the Congresso Luso-Canadiano, the Portuguese Canadian Credit Union, and the first Portuguese school in Toronto, among many others.

For decades, when it was located on College and Crawford streets, First Portuguese was the most prominent landmark of the Portuguese community in Toronto. Here, the community attended theatre productions, participated in Fado nights, learned Portuguese, read Portuguese books from an extensive library, appreciated art, and basked in the glory of a soccer team that met no rival.

The Portuguese language was first taught in Toronto on October 10, 1964 at 244 Augusta Avenue to a class of 21 students. Branca Gomes was the teacher. She was also the founder of the school. Four years later, it received official recognition from the Government of Portugal. From July 15 to 17 of 1968, the first official 4th grade exams of Portuguese were held in Canada. In September of that same year, First Portuguese began teaching grades 5 and 6.

CURRENT SITUATION

FPCCC’s current reality is less glamorous than that of its glorious past but it continues to serve the community with varied programs for all ages. Its Daycare continues to thrive as does the Senior’s Centre. First Portuguese also offers computer classes and fitness sessions, among other activities.

The Portuguese school continues to be the staple of the organization.

I was surfing the Net when this video came up, “Dubai Photos That Will Make You Think Twice.”

I already knew that police officers drive Lamborghinis and Bugattis, just to name a few, and that there is zero crime.  What I never thought about is that handsome men can be deported due to their handsomeness.

Omar Borkan Al Gala, model, was born in Baghdad, Iraq, but was raised in Dubai.

The story goes like this. Omar became notorious in 2013 when he was working on a promotion stand during the Jandriyad Cultural Festival in Riyad, Saudi Arabia. Some girls recognized him from some modelling he had done. As they gathered for autographs and photos, the crowd grew.

The religion police didn’t like it. They asked him to leave the festival.

Saudi Arabia's Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vices enforces strict rules limiting interaction between men and women who aren't related.

After he gained notoriety in 2013, he relocated to Vancouver, Canada.

I would have joined the group as well !!!
