“The Bacino di San Marco from the Piazzetta” around 1735
Canaletto – Venice, 1687-1768
"Situated in the social and economic hub of Venice, the
Pizzetta di San Marco would have been bustling with tourist, merchants, and
businesspeople in the 1700s, as is the case today. For centuries, the Italian
coastal town was the epicenter of trade between Europe, Africa, and Asia. The
city’s substantial power was in decline in the 1700s, replaced by his growing
status as a global destination for tourists – Canaletto’s primary clientele. The
true subject of the scene, however, is not the people in the square; instead,
Canaletto lavishes attention on the architecture of the city and the ships on
the water."
Situada no centro
social e económico de Veneza, a Praceta de São Marco fervilhava de turistas,
comerciantes e empresários no século XVIII, tal como acontece hoje. Durante
a África e a Ásia.
desta cidade.)

...I understand that many sites have way too many tourists and they often behave poorly.
